Detailed Reserved Zone Tour Itinerary (7 Days)

Day 1: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Pona Lodge

• Cusco to the Cloud Forest: Start your Amazon adventure with an early 5:00 a.m. pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Our private transport will take you on a scenic drive through the majestic Andean mountains.

• Pre-Inca History: We make a technical stop in Huancarani for a hot breakfast and visit the Ninamarca pre-Inca funeral towers for a touch of ancient Peruvian culture.

• Folklore of Paucartambo: Continue to the traditional town of Paucartambo, famous for its rich Andean folklore and vibrant traditions.

• Entering Manu National Park: Our journey takes us to the entrance of Manu National Park.

• Birdwatching in the Cloud Forest: Descend into the lush Cloud Forest, a biodiversity hotspot. Keep your eyes peeled for Peru's national bird, the vibrant "Cock of the Rock," and other exotic bird species. The air is filled with the impressive symphony of jungle sounds.

• Overnight: Settle into the comfort of the welcoming Pona Lodge for your first night.

Day 2: Pona Lodge – Madre de Dios River – Papaya Eco Lodge

• Journey to the Amazon: After an early breakfast, we travel to Atalaya port. Along the way, we'll visit local farmers and learn about their jungle fruit cultivation, including the famous coca plant.

• River Expedition: Board our private boat for a journey down the Madre de Dios River, a tributary of the great Amazon River. Watch for colorful, exotic birds along the riverbanks.

• Jungle Wildlife and Hot Springs: Look for native wildlife like capybaras and monkeys as we stop at natural hot springs for a relaxing break.

• Arrival at the Eco Lodge: Arrive at the comfortable Papaya Eco Lodge around 3:00 p.m.

• Night Walk Adventure: Experience the jungle after dark on a guided night walk. Search for nocturnal creatures like tarantulas, scorpions, and snakes.

Day 3: Papaya Eco Lodge – Tapir Clay Lick at Camouflage Lodge

• Jungle Trek to the Camouflage House: Today is an unforgettable deep jungle experience. We'll hike through the lush rainforest to the Camouflage Lodge, carrying our dinner for the night.

• Tapir Clay Lick Encounter: Spend the night at the Camouflage House, strategically located near a clay lick. Watch from the comfort of the lodge as the Tapir, the largest land mammal in the Amazon, comes to lick the mineral-rich clay. You'll have a high probability of a stunning nocturnal wildlife viewing.

Day 4: Manu River – Casa Matsiguenka (Reserved Zone)

• Travel into the Reserved Zone: Leave the Madre de Dios River behind and travel by boat up the Manu River into the highly protected Reserved Zone. Stop at the Limonal ranger station to present our official permits.

• Wildlife Viewing on the Manu River: This is a prime opportunity for wildlife encounters. The riverbanks are known for sunbathing caimans, breeding side-necked turtles, and roosting nightjars.

• Searching for the Jaguar: This stretch of river is one of the best places in the world to spot the elusive and powerful Jaguar, the Amazon's third-largest cat.

• Primate Sightings: Keep an eye out for primates, including the red howler and smaller squirrel monkeys.

• Native Matsiguenka Community: After about five hours, we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka, a native-owned rustic lodge that supports the Matsiguenka community.

• Night Forest Walk: After settling in, you have the option to join your guide for a night walk through the exclusive forest trails to seek out nocturnal animals.

Day 5: Cocha Salvador & Cocha Otorongo – Giant Otters & Wildlife

• Explore Lake Cocha Salvador: Take a silent floating catamaran onto the oxbow lake of Cocha Salvador. This allows for unparalleled wildlife observation from the water, from agami herons to feeding brown capuchin monkeys.

• Witness Giant River Otters: This area is home to a family of Giant River Otters. Your guide will take you to special viewing platforms to observe these fascinating freshwater carnivores as they hunt and play.

• Jungle Trails and Observation Tower: Continue exploring the trails in the rainforest. We will be on the lookout for woolly and black spider monkeys and other species. A special 20-meter observation tower at Cocha Otorongo provides a spectacular view of the rainforest canopy and another chance to see giant river otters.

Day 6: Reserved Zone Exploration & Return to Papaya Eco Lodge

• Rainforest Ecosystems: Spend the morning exploring more of the Reserved Zone, with your guide explaining the basics of rainforest ecosystems and highlighting the medicinal plants used by indigenous groups. Look for troops of peccaries (wild boar) and poisonous frogs.

• Downstream Journey: After lunch, we begin our journey downstream, continuing to scan the riverbanks for animals, including another chance to spot the magnificent Jaguar.

• Sunset at Papaya Eco Lodge: We arrive at the Papaya Eco Lodge near Boca Manu village in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset. An optional night walk is available.

Day 7: Papaya Eco Lodge – Return to Cusco

• Departure from Manu: Leave the Papaya Eco Lodge early in the morning via a private vehicle for the return trip to Cusco.

• Scenic Journey: Travel through the cloud forest once more, with opportunities for additional sightseeing and final photos.

• Arrival in Cusco: Arrive back in Cusco at approximately 8:30 p.m., concluding your incredible Manu Amazon tour.
